Sometimes your goal race changes, your event gets moved, or you simply need more time. When that happens, it’s important to update your plan in the right place so Runna can rebuild your training and keep your progression on track.
Changing your race date or plan end date through Manage Plan allows Runna to rebalance your mileage, key sessions, and taper so your plan still fits your goal.
How to Change Your Race Date or Plan End Date
To update your race date or plan end date:
Open the Runna app
Go to the Plan tab
Tap Manage Plan
Select Race Date or Plan End Date / Edit End Date
Choose your new date
Confirm your changes and allow your plan to rebuild
⚠️ It’s important to make date changes through Manage Plan, rather than dragging workouts around in the calendar. Your plan needs to rebuild to maintain safe progression and taper.
Which Plans Let You Change the Date?
Most distance-based race plans and distance-goal plans allow you to change the race date or plan end date through Manage Plan.
General Training plans such as Run Faster, Run Further, Run to Maintain, and Train Your Way don’t usually have a race date in the same way as a fixed race plan. Instead, they use a plan end date.
Some older or original-style plans have more limited controls, so date changes may not always be available. In those cases, your best options are usually to start a new plan, or keep your current plan and log your event manually.
Why Might My Date Change Be Blocked?
There are a few common reasons why Runna may prevent a date change:
Your new date makes the taper too short
Your final weeks before a race are carefully designed to reduce fatigue and help you arrive fresh on race day. If the new date doesn’t leave enough time for that taper, the app may block the change.
Your new date would make the plan too short
Some dates may be greyed out because the resulting plan would be too short for the minimum training length required for your goal, ability level, or plan settings.
Your new date would make the plan too long
Runna plans can be a maximum of 26 weeks long. If your new date would push your plan beyond that limit, you won’t be able to save the change.
Your plan type has limited flexibility
Some legacy or older-style plans have fewer editing options. In some cases, start date or race date changes may not be supported.
A B-race may be causing a conflict
If you already have a B-race in your plan, changing your race date may cause your B-race to fall too close to your A-race or interfere with tapering.
FAQs
Why did I get a “We Hit a Problem” error when changing plan end date?
This usually means the new date doesn’t leave enough time for your plan to rebuild safely.
What to try:
Choose a date 1–2 weeks later
Try nearby dates such as +7 days or +14 days
Check whether an existing B-race is creating a conflict
Moving your race slightly later often gives the plan enough room to include the taper and key sessions you need.
Why are some dates greyed out when trying to change the plan end date?
Greyed-out dates usually mean the plan would become too short to support safe and effective training.
If you need your plan to finish sooner, the best option is often to:
start a new plan built around your target date, or
keep your current plan and add your event manually if you mainly want the race recorded
What if I can't extend my plan any further?
If Runna won’t let you move your date further out, it’s usually because you’ve hit the 26-week maximum plan length.
In that case, the best option is to start a new plan with a start date that places your race within the 26-week training window. Your training history and completed runs will remain saved in your account.
What if I can't change my race day but still want it recorded correctly?
If your actual event date can’t be selected, or your plan won’t allow the change, you can still record your race using a workaround:
Add an Instant Race workout on your actual race date
Complete your race as normal
Once it syncs, link the activity to your original Runna race workout if needed
This helps ensure your race is still logged correctly, even if your plan end date stays the same.
Can I drag my race workout to a different date instead?
We don’t recommend this. Changing your race date through Manage Plan allows Runna to rebuild your full plan safely, including mileage progression and taper. Dragging workouts in the calendar won’t do that.
Will changing my race date just add or remove a few weeks?
Not exactly. When you change your race date, Runna creates a rebuilt continuation of your plan rather than simply inserting or deleting weeks. This helps keep your training balanced and appropriate for your goal.
Will changing my date affect my mileage?
Yes, it can. Shorter plans usually build mileage more quickly, while longer plans allow a more gradual progression.
Will I lose my completed runs if I change the date?
No — your completed run history stays saved in your account.
What should I do if my race is more than 26 weeks away?
The best option is usually to start with a shorter-distance or general training plan first, then move into your main race plan closer to race day.
