How to Add a Holiday in the Runna App

For North American users, this feature is called “Vacation,” but it works exactly the same way.

Going on holiday is an exciting time, and we understand that your running plan might need to adapt around it. Whether you’re planning to train hard or take a well-deserved break, our new Holiday Mode (or Vacation Mode for North American customers) has you covered.

This feature allows you to adjust your training plan around your trip, keeping your fitness goals on track while giving you the flexibility to enjoy your holiday.

What is Holiday Mode?

Holiday Mode is a feature in the Runna app that allows you to:

  • Customize your training schedule during your holiday, whether you’re running every day or taking a break.

  • Adjust your plan to fit the workout types you want to maintain while away.

  • Automatically adapt your mileage progression, deload weeks, and workout types based on your holiday preferences.

This ensures your running plan remains tailored to your goals without unnecessary stress.

How Does Holiday Mode Work?

Here’s how you can use Holiday Mode:

1. Accessing Holiday Mode:

  • Go to the ‘Plan’ tab in the app.

  • Select ‘Manage Plan’ > ‘Adapt Plan’ > ‘Add a Holiday’.

  • First-time customers will see a helpful banner prompting them to add a holiday.

2. Setting Up Your Holiday

  • Select the start and end dates of your trip (3–21 days).

  • Tell us how you’d like to train while away:

    • All workouts: Complete your usual mix of speed sessions, long runs, and easy runs.

    • Easy and long runs / Easy and speed runs: You'll see different options here depending on the goal you're training for.

      • If your planned race is a Half Marathon or longer, you can opt for your easy and long runs to help you stay on track for your target.

      • If the race you're training for is shorter than a Half Marathon, you'll see the option to keep your easy and speed runs to help keep your paces on track for your goal.

    • Easy runs only: Keep it light with relaxed, untimed runs.

    • No running: Take a complete break—no judgement!

3. Plan Adjustments

  • Once your holiday is added, Runna will:

    • Rearrange deload weeks if applicable.

    • Adjust workout types and mileage progression.

    • Update your plan to ensure you’re ready to pick up where you left off.

4. Holiday Confirmation

  • We’ll show you a summary of changes, including any potential impact on your race time, mileage, and schedule.

  • You can even rename your holiday to make it personal (e.g., “Beach Break”).

What Happens After Your Holiday?

  • Your training plan automatically resumes after your holiday with adjustments tailored to your fitness level.

  • You’ll receive a push notification reminding you to get back into your routine.

FAQs

What if I want to change my training type after my holiday starts?

Currently, you can’t edit your holiday preferences once it’s started, but this is on our development roadmap!

Can I take a holiday longer than 21 days?

For longer breaks, we recommend starting a new plan as your fitness may significantly change. Technically, you can stack holidays, but it’s not advised for optimal training.

How many holidays can I add?

There’s no limit! But let’s keep things sensible to ensure your training remains effective.

Quick Troubleshooting Guide

If you’re having trouble adding a holiday, check the following:

  • App Version: Ensure you’re using version 7.2 or later.

  • Plan Type: Holiday Mode is available for race plans and distance-based goal plans, like 10km improvement plans, or marathons. It is not yet available for New to Running or Return to Running.
