Renowned for its flawless organisation, passionate crowd support, and a flat route with minimal elevation changes, the Tokyo Marathon is a bucket-list race for runners seeking both a world-class marathon and an unforgettable cultural experience.
🎒 What Should I Pack?
Packing for race day is essential, not only to make sure you have everything you need (down to the last safety pin) but also to fuel that exciting pre-race excitement!
Here are some things to consider:
Running Kit: Wear your race-day outfit before you set off for the race in the morning. Tokyo’s weather in March is cool and mild—ideal for running. Temperatures range from 5°C to 13°C (41°F to 55°F). While light rain is possible on some of the 9–10 rainy days in the month, it rarely impacts the race. Keep this in mind when packing race day fit options! Top Tip: pin your race number onto your kit the night before, to save any last-minute stress in the morning!
Sports Nutrition: Pack any gels, chews, or snacks you’ve used in training. There may be options handed out on the course, but bring your own so you know you're prepped. Remember it's advised not to try anything new on race day and to stick to what you know!
A pre-run layer: It is a good idea to bring an old jumper to the start line to keep warm. It can be cold early in Tokyo, even if the forecast is bright for the rest of the day. We would suggest bringing some warm clothes which you can then discard at the start line. Tokyo Marathon have partnered with charities in the past to donate these items of clothing, check out the official Tokyo Marathon website or contact the organisers directly for the latest update on 2025's event.
Bag Drop: Pack a warm layer, spare socks, blister plasters, and a recovery snack for after the race.
Electronics: Charge your phone, watch, earphones and any other gadgets you may be using the night before. Download any necessary playlists or podcasts which will get you through those miles / kms! Check out our music suggestions here!

👀 Should I Run the Day Before?
Some runners find a short, easy run the day before helps shake out the legs and calm the nerves. If this has worked for you in the past, go for it! If not, consider some light foam rolling or stretching instead. A walk to keep those legs fresh could also be an option. Listen to your body and be mindful not to overdo it before the big day.
🍝 What Should I Eat the Day Before the Race?
During the week leading up to your race, keep it simple with high-carb, familiar foods like pasta, rice, bread, and potatoes to keep energy up and your stomach happy. Carb-loading can help you feel fuelled without overdoing it: spread your carbs throughout the day and stick with foods you’ve enjoyed in training. Avoid anything too fatty, spicy, or brand new—it’s not the time for surprises! Stay well-hydrated, and skip alcohol for a good night’s sleep. Rest, hydrate, and feel ready to hit the ground running!

💪 Final Preparations & Official Start Times
Once you're packed, fuelled, and hydrated, consider adding a light mobility session to your bedtime routine. Stretching can help release any tension and prepare you for a restful sleep before race day.
The Marathon will officially start at 09:10am with a cut-off time of 7 hours according to gun time. With such a large number of participants, runners are assigned to specific waves based on their estimated finish times to ensure a smooth race experience. Ensure to check official pre-race information about what specific time you will be starting your race, and what wave you will be starting from.
Make sure to get that alarm set, and we recommend finishing any preparation the night before. The morning will be for fuelling, travelling, and managing that excited/nervous energy!
🚃 How Do I Get to the Start Line?
The day is here!
To get to the start line of the Tokyo Marathon, it's recommended to use public transportation, as road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place on race day.
The start line is located near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, and the nearest subway station is Tochōmae Station on the Toei Ōedo Line, which is directly beneath the building. Shinjuku Station, a major hub with multiple train and subway lines, is also nearby, just a 10-minute walk from the start area.
Consider arriving early to allow time for security checks and to navigate potential crowds. If you prefer, taxis are available, but public transit is the most reliable option. Be sure to check the official Tokyo Marathon website for any last-minute updates or changes to transportation and start line instructions closer to the time. Once you're there, soak in the electric atmosphere as you prepare to take on one of the world's most iconic marathons—this is the start of an unforgettable journey!

Spectating live from Tokyo, or from afar? Follow the progress of your friends, family and your favourite runners live! Searchable predicted location of the runners by bib number or name will be made available closer to race day. Keep an eye out for updates from the official website here.
🐌 How should I pace myself on race day?
The Tokyo course is considered pretty flat, so you’ll have the opportunity to fully utilise the race day workout provided by Runna. Expect pacing alerts and audio cues similar to those during your training runs, helping you stay on track. Pacing can be tricky with the excitement of the start line. To avoid going out too fast, practice your race-day routine during your shakeout run. Download your playlists, set up Runna for pace or RPE cues, and ensure your devices are fully charged.
Start off at a comfortable pace and aim to and try not to worry about what other runners are doing. Focus on your race, and listen to the crowds who will be rooting for you the whole way round!
Be aware that the tall buildings and skyscrapers in the city can cause some GPS issues on race day. It's a good idea to rely on the pace markers and your own instincts regarding your marathon pace.

🛰️ How Should I Navigate GPS Issues on the Day?
With so many runners, GPS signals can be spotty at times. Stick to your usual method of recording your runs on Runna, and be prepared for a possible delay in uploading your race data. If you encounter issues, save your activity and refresh your app when you have a stronger signal or Wi-Fi.
🎖️ What's Next After the Race?
You did it! Now it's time to celebrate! Grab a refreshment, loosen your shoelaces, and take some time to stretch and enjoy the moment.
Best of luck with your Tokyo Marathon 2025, and most importantly, have fun!
