Action needed if you use Fitbit: The Fitbit app has moved to Google Health, so your existing connection needs to be re-established through it to keep your activities syncing. See the Reconnecting after the Google Health change section below for the steps.
Overview of Fitbit
Fitbit is a health and fitness brand known for its wearable tracking devices and companion app. Within the app, you can monitor metrics like daily steps, heart rate, and sleep, set wellness goals, and share milestones with friends.
By connecting Fitbit to Runna, the activities you record on your Fitbit sync back into the Runna app. That means your actual runs line up against your planned workouts, so you can see how your training is going in one place.
Compatible Fitbit Devices
Any Fitbit device with GPS capabilities will work with Runna:
Fitbit Ionic
Fitbit Versa 3 and up
Fitbit Sense
Fitbit Charge 4 and up
Pairing With Fitbit
To pair your Runna app with Fitbit, head to your Runna Profile and tap Connected Apps. Next, tap Connect Watch, then select Fitbit.
You'll be prompted to sign in to your Fitbit account and accept permissions. Once accepted, your Fitbit connection will show on the Connected Apps screen.
What Syncs, and How
When you record a run on your Fitbit, it syncs back into Runna along with your heart rate, pace, distance, and calories. Once it's in Runna, you can link it to the planned workout it matches.
Fitbit syncs through the Google Health app, and Google Health needs to be opened for the sync to happen. So after you finish a run, open Google Health (previously the Fitbit app) on your phone. That prompts your activity to pass through to Runna. If you never open Google Health, your run can sit on your device without reaching Runna.
Reconnecting After the Google Health Change
The Fitbit app has become Google Health, and this changes how your Fitbit connects to Runna. To keep your activities syncing, you need to reconnect through Google Health.
To reconnect:
Head to your Runna Profile and tap Connected Apps.
Tap Connect Watch, then select Fitbit.
Sign in through Google Health when prompted, and accept the permissions.
Once you're reconnected, opening Google Health after each run will sync your activities across to Runna as normal.
Troubleshooting
Most Fitbit syncing questions come down to a few things. Here's how to get your activities back into Runna.
My run didn't sync into Runna
Open Google Health. Fitbit only syncs when Google Health is opened, so this is the first thing to check. Open the app and give it a moment to update.
Check the date on the activity. Runna links activities to the day they were recorded. If the date or time on your Fitbit is off, the run may not line up with your planned workout.
Reconnect the connection. If it still hasn't appeared, go to Profile → Connected Apps, disconnect Fitbit, then reconnect through Google Health following the steps above.
Link it manually. If the run has synced but hasn't attached to your planned workout, open the workout in Runna and use Link Activity to attach the correct run.
My heart rate, pace, or distance isn't showing
Heart rate, pace, distance, and calories all sync from Fitbit, but they rely on the data permissions you granted when you connected. If any of these are missing:
Open Google Health and check that data permissions are switched on for the activity you're looking at.
Open Google Health so the latest data syncs across.
If it's still missing, disconnect and reconnect Fitbit in Runna to refresh the permissions.
I've got a duplicate or an activity with the wrong distance
Occasionally an activity can appear twice or import with a distance that doesn't match the run you did. You can remove the incorrect version in your Activities tab so it doesn't affect your training data. If an activity won't delete or is skewing your plan, contact us through in-app support and we'll sort it out.
Fitbit Limitations
Since Fitbit is a lifestyle and activity tracker rather than a sports watch, Runna can't send your prescribed workouts to a Fitbit device. This means you won't get live, guided coaching during your workouts. You'll guide yourself using what you see in the Runna app, and your Fitbit will sync the run back afterward.
If you've reconnected through Google Health, checked your permissions, and your activities still aren't syncing, contact us through in-app support and we'll help you get it working.
