GPS Data Inaccuracies: What They Mean and Why They Happen

What Is Inaccurate GPS Data?

The data captured during an outdoor workout relies heavily on your device’s GPS. Runna (like all run-tracking apps) uses a continuous stream of location points to calculate your distance, speed, and route.

Inaccurate GPS data occurs when the locations recorded by your device don’t match your true position. This can lead to issues such as:

  • Incorrect pacing feedback

  • Distorted elevation data

  • Distances that appear too long or too short

  • Activity data that doesn’t accurately reflect your run


What Happens When GPS Is Inaccurate?

There are two main types of GPS issues:

  1. Complete GPS Signal Loss

    If your device loses its entire connection with GPS satellites, then no location data will be recorded for this period of time. This can cause:

    • Missing route maps

    • Straight lines connecting large gaps in your run

  2. Poor GPS Accuracy

    If your device receives low-quality GPS data points, your tracked route may drift away from your actual path. This can cause:

    • Incorrect distance tracking

    • Unreliable speed and pacing measurements

Given that Runna relies on many data points throughout your workout, even small inaccuracies can create noticeable errors over time.


What Causes GPS Inaccuracies?

Some level of GPS error is normal across all devices, especially on phones where GPS hardware can vary significantly.

Several environmental and technical factors can reduce GPS accuracy, including:

Signal Interference

GPS signals can be weakened or blocked by:

  • Tall buildings

  • Dense tree cover or forests

  • Tunnels

  • Adverse weather conditions

In cities, signals may also bounce off skyscrapers which results in less accurate positioning.

Poor Satellite Reception

GPS accuracy depends on the number and quality of satellite signals received by your device. Reception may be worse in:

  • Deep valleys or hilly terrain

  • Remote areas with limited coverage

  • Indoor or underground environments

Software Issues

GPS performance can also be affected by outdated software or background app interference. We recommend:

  • Ensuring your operating system and apps are up to date

  • Closing unused apps

  • Restarting your device if the GPS behaves unexpectedly

Location Services Settings

Your device’s location settings can also impact the accuracy of GPS signals. Make sure:

  • Location Services are enabled for Runna

  • High Accuracy mode is turned on (GPS + Wi-Fi + mobile networks)

Battery-saving modes rely more on WiFi or cellular signals, so this could also reduce GPS accuracy.

Hardware Limitations

In some cases, hardware issues (such as a damaged GPS antenna or water exposure) can reduce signal quality. If problems persist, contacting your device manufacturer may help.
