The Berlin Marathon, established in 1974, is renowned for its fast, flat course, which has been the site of numerous world records. Notably, Eliud Kipchoge set the men’s world record of 2:01:09 in 2022, and Tigist Assefa set the women’s world record of 2:11:53 in 2023. The race attracts over 40,000 participants from more than 120 countries, making it a truly international event. This year should be even more special as it is the 50 year anniversary of the inauguration of the marathon 🥳

💼 What Should I Pack?

Packing for race day is crucial. Not only is it important to ensure you haven’t forgotten anything vital, but also to get that pre-race buzz turned up! Here’s some things to consider:

  • Running Kit: Wear your race-day outfit before you set off for the race in the morning.

  • Sports Nutrition: Pack any gels, chews, or snacks you’ve used in training. There will be gels handed out on the course, but bring your own so you know you're prepped!

  • A pre-run layer: It is a good idea to bring an old jumper to the start line to keep warm. Discarded clothing is usually collected and donated to charity at the end.

  • Drop Bag: Pack a warm top, spare socks, blister plasters, and a recovery snack for after the race.

  • Electronics: Charge your phone, watch, and headphones the night before. Download any necessary playlists which will get you through those kms!

  • Sun Cream: Packing a small tube of SPF can also be helpful in case the Autumn sun makes an appearance!

🗺️ How do I collect my race bib & wristband and where is the expo located?

Please visit this website to see all of the important information regarding picking up your race bib & wristband and how to get to the expo: https://www.bmw-berlin-marathon.com/en/preparation/race-material

Remember to bring along a valid photo ID and your Start-card which will be emailed to you around 7 days before the race. Please remember - Bibs are not available to collect on the day of the race and runners have to collect their own wristband and bib - you can't have someone collect this for you.

🚌 How do I get to the start line?

The start line is located on Straße des 17. Juni, between the Brandenburg Gate and the “Kleiner Stern” in the Tiergarten. You can use Berlin’s efficient public transport system to get there. Your race bib includes a 4-day public transport ticket for fare zones A, B, and C, valid throughout race week. The nearest stations are Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) for the S-Bahn and Bundestag or Brandenburger Tor for the U-Bahn.

🏃 Where will I be running?

The Berlin Marathon route is renowned for being one of the flattest and fastest courses among the major marathons. The 42.195 km (26.2 miles) course takes runners through some of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and the Berlin Cathedral.

There are km markers for each km. Pro-tip is to try and run along or as close to the blue line painted on the floor. The blue line marks the shortest certified distance of the marathon course, ensuring you run as close to 42.195 km (26.2 miles) as possible. This can help you avoid running extra distance, which can be crucial for maintaining your pace and energy levels.

🐌 How should I pace myself on race day?

As the Berlin Marathon is a flat course, you will be able to take full advantage of the race day workout provided by Runna! You will receive pacing alerts and audio cues just like you do in your training runs that have pacing segments - if in doubt, look ahead in your plan and check the target pace range we'll be providing you, and ensure that you have this synced to any connected devices if you're running with a Coros, Garmin or Suunto watch. Start off conservatively and then aim to negative split at the halfway point. The crowds are fantastic and you will be cheered on the whole way!

👪 How do I meet up with friends and family after?

After the Berlin Marathon, you can meet your friends and family at the designated family meeting point in front of the Paul Löbe House. Look for the sign with the first letter of your last name. This area is specifically designed to help runners reconnect with their loved ones after the race ❤️

Additionally, popular landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and Pariser Platz are also great spots to meet up. These locations are easily accessible and well-known, making them convenient meeting points.

🛰️ How Should I Navigate GPS Issues on the Day?

With so many runners, GPS signals can sometimes be spotty. Stick to your usual method of recording your run with Runna, and be prepared for a possible delay in uploading your race data. If you encounter issues, save your activity and refresh your app when you have a stronger signal or Wi-Fi.
