What is the Plan Realignment feature?

Sometimes a particularly busy spell can even mean you miss workouts across multiple weeks. The Plan Realignment feature is a pop-up notification that will appear at the bottom of your Today or Plan tab when the app detects that you've missed more than three workouts, or a week of training. Typically, this appears on a Monday and will give you a few options to choose from depending on your training goal and plan length. To make sure the Plan Realignment pop-up appears, don't mark your missed workouts as skipped (i.e. leave them unticked).

What should I do if I missed a single workout?

It’s happened to all of us. You start the week with the best intentions, but life, illness, or other commitments get in the way - and suddenly those planned runs don’t happen.

When that happens, you have a few options:

  • If you still want to do this workout but at a later date, you can use the Training Calendar. This lets you rearrange single sessions within the same week, a week backward or a week forward.

  • If you missed a single session but plan to follow the upcoming workouts in that week, you can use the Skip Workout button on the workout details page to mark it as skipped. Unless it's a key long run, skipping one workout won't make too much difference to your fitness so don't worry about adjusting future workouts.

  • If you miss one workout and you know you'll probably miss more (3+ or a full week), don't mark them as Skipped (leave them unticked) so the Plan Realignment pop-up can appear (usually on a Monday) and get you back on track.

What adjustments will I get if I miss multiple workouts?

If you’ve missed more than three workouts or a whole week of training, you may see the Plan Realignment feature pop-up. This gives you options to get back on track without having to manually update every workout.

  • Skip missed workouts: Skip last week’s missed workouts and continue with the current week.

  • Rearrange missed workouts: Move missed workouts to later in the week (make sure not to double up!)

What adjustments will I get if I miss multiple weeks?

Sometimes, you may need to take a couple of weeks away from your plan due to illness, a minor injury or a particularly busy period.

If this happens, you may see the Plan Realignment pop-up with the following options (depending on your plan type):

  • Extend your plan: If you don’t have a fixed end date, you’ll be able to extend your plan by the amount of time you've been away. Example: If you’re on a 12-week 5K improvement plan and miss 2 weeks, we can extend your plan to 14 weeks.

  • Rebuild your plan with your current end date: If you have a fixed end date (like a race), we can rebuild your plan from today to target the same end date.

  • Continue your plan unchanged: This will skip any missed weeks and let you continue from the current calendar week in your plan.

These options are always yours to choose from, but our coaches recommend rebuilding or extending your plan to help minimise injury risk following any time away.

What adjustments will I get if I miss more than a month of training?

After a month away from training, we strongly recommend starting a new plan or restarting your current plan. Your fitness level is likely to have changed, and jumping back in where you “should” be can increase your risk of injury. This is because your plan will have continued to progress in the app whilst you were away, so the workouts will no longer be the most sustainable or effective fit for where you are right now.

That being said, missing more than four weeks of workouts will trigger a different set of options in the Plan Realignment pop-up notification.

The options you may see are:

  • Start a new plan: Takes you back to the plan set-up screen.

  • Restart your current plan: Restarts your current plan using the same information you entered originally.

  • Rebuild plan with current end date: Regenerates your plan from today and targets the original end date - ideal if you’re training for a race or specific date!

  • Continue your plan unchanged: Skips missed weeks and continues from the current week. This may increase injury risk as the plan has progressed beyond what your current fitness is capable of.

The last option may increase injury risk as the plan has progressed beyond what your current fitness is capable of. If you choose this option, be cautious and listen to your body.

FAQs

Why can't I see the Plan Realignment pop-up notification?

If you think you’ve missed more than three workouts but aren’t seeing the Plan Realignment pop-up, please check the following:

  • Ensure all missed workouts have been left unticked/un-skipped

  • Check whether you have an actionable mileage insight.

If you’ve checked all of the above and still don’t see the pop-up, let us know via the in-app support channel and we’ll be happy to help!

Why I can't see my updated workouts on my compatible smartwatch?

You’ll need to refresh the connection between the Runna app and your third-party app (such as Garmin or COROS), as well as your watch’s Bluetooth connection, to pull through your updated workouts.

Can I skip or jump ahead to a future week in my plan?

Currently, it's not possible to skip forward to following weeks in the plan. Your plan progresses automatically based on the assigned dates, ensuring your training stays structured and effective. If you miss any sessions or know you're going to miss sessions, simply leave them unticked. A Plan Realignment popup will appear at the bottom of the Today and Plan tabs. If you need to skip a week, please let us know the reason and we can recommend further.
