How to Adjust Your Plan Around Holidays

Planning a trip, holiday or vacation? Learn how you can stay on track with your training or take a full break without losing your progress with Holiday Mode.

Written by Alex Ainsworth

Going on holiday is an exciting time - whether it's a beach trip, a ski break, or just a week away. With Holiday Mode (or Vacation Mode for North American runners), you can adjust your training plan around your trip, keeping your fitness goals on track while giving you the flexibility to enjoy your trip.

What is Holiday Mode?

Holiday Mode is a feature in the Runna app that allows you to:

  • Customize your training schedule during your holiday, whether you’d like to run every day or take a break.

  • Adjust your plan to fit the workout types you want to maintain while away.

  • Automatically adapt your mileage progression, deload weeks, and workout types based on your holiday preferences.

This ensures your running plan remains tailored to your goals without unnecessary stress.

How to Adapt Your Plan For a Holiday/Vacation

For your plan to adjust during your trip, you'll have to add a Holiday. To do that:

  1. Go to Plan tab → Tap Manage Plan → Select Holidays under Adapt Your Plan → Tap Add Holiday/Vacation

  2. Select the start and end dates of your trip (between 3 and 21 days)

  3. Choose how you’d like to train while you’re away. The options you’ll get depend on your plan type. These can be:

    1. Easy, long and hard runs (All workouts): this would mean you’d like to stick to your full schedule of workouts during your holiday break

    2. Easy and long runs: for half marathon or longer race plans

    3. Easy and speed runs: for distance race plans where your race is shorter than a Half-Marathon

    4. Easy runs only: keep it light and relaxed

    5. I am not planning on running: full break, no judgement!

  4. If you want to remove Strength, Yoga, or Pilates sessions during your holiday, toggle on Remove non-running workouts

  5. Type in a name for your Holiday (e.g. July Beach Break)

  6. Review the summary of changes. Runna will show any impact on your race time, mileage, or schedule.

Once you confirm, we will automatically rearrange deload weeks, adjust workout types and mileage progression, and send you a push notification when your holiday ends to nudge you back into routine.

What Happens After Your Holiday?

  • Your training plan automatically resumes after your holiday with adjustments tailored to your fitness level.

  • You’ll receive a push notification reminding you to get back into your routine.

Why Adjusting Your Plan Matters

Taking time off or scaling back your training can affect your progress, especially if you’re preparing for a race. Holiday Mode ensures your plan is personalized to minimize the impact on your goals.

Whether you’re relaxing by the pool or tackling a mountain trail, this feature keeps your training flexible and stress-free.

How to Delete a Holiday

You can delete a Holiday from your plan at any time:

  1. Go to Plan Tab

  2. Tap Manage Plan

  3. Tap Holiday Tab under Adapt Your Plan

  4. Tap Discard Holiday.

FAQs

Why can't I add a holiday?

If you’re having trouble adding a holiday, check the following:

  • App Version: Ensure you’re using version 7.2 or later.

  • Plan Type: Holiday Mode is available for most plans except older-style plans such as Hyrox, Functional Fitness, Post-Natal, Post-Injury and Post-Race Recovery. If you're on one of these plans and need time away, simply leave those workouts unticked — do not mark them as Complete or press Skip Workout. A Plan Realignment popup will appear when you return to training to help you get back on track.

What if I want to change my training type after my holiday starts?

Currently, you can’t edit your holiday preferences once it’s started, but this is on our development roadmap!

Can I take a holiday longer than 21 days?

No, the holiday period is capped at 21 days long. For longer breaks, we recommend starting a new plan as your fitness may significantly change. Technically, you can stack holidays, but it’s not advised for optimal training.

How many holidays can I add?

There’s no limit! However, frequent breaks may reduce how effective your plan is overall. You’re free to add as many as you need - just keep in mind that it may slightly reduce your plan’s overall outcome or training goal.

Can I add a holiday in the past?

No, you cannot add a holiday in the past if you’ve already taken a break from training.

If you’ve missed sessions on your plan, simply leave those workouts unticked - do not mark them as ‘Complete’ or press ‘Skip workout.’

When you’re ready to return to training, a Plan Realignment popup will appear at the bottom of your Today and/or Plan tabs. This will allow you to adjust your plan, with options that vary depending on how many workouts you’ve missed.

Will adding a holiday change the length of my plan?

No. Holiday Mode adapts sessions within your existing window and doesn’t normally change the plan length or end date. It won’t push a plan beyond 26 weeks unless you manually change the plan dates or start a new plan.

How long can a holiday be?

You can set a holiday between 3 and 21 days long.
If your break lasts longer than 21 days, we recommend starting a new plan when you’re ready to return, as your fitness level may change during that time.
