What are pace target recommendations?

Pace target recommendations are a new feature designed to help adapt your plan based on your completed workout data.

We have heard from you that sometimes it feels like the plan is becoming too difficult, or is feeling too easy. Powered by Runna AI, pace target recommendations are designed to recognise this proactively and give you a fine-tuned plan pace target. This aims to adjust your training to a sustainable yet challenging level, which is highly personalised to you and your ability!

What is Runna AI?

At Runna, we use AI to ensure that your running plan adapts to you and your workout performances. This helps keep your training on track and personalises your plan based on your unique running data.

How does it work?

In the background, Runna AI will analyse how you're performing in workouts compared to what we've been setting you. If it detects that you are deviating consistently, it'll suggest a recommendation to bring your training in line with your current performance.

For adaptive pace target recommendations, Runna AI specifically analyses your paces in different reps across multiple speed workouts -

We need to see at least three hard planned runs before we can make a recommendation.

How will this be communicated to me?

RunnaAI lives on the 'plan overview' screen on your train tab.

You will see a card that will be in one of five states:

Monitoring your pace data: RunnaAI is tracking your runs, but doesn't have the required number of workouts to analyse your paces and make a recommendation. Keep completing speed sessions!

Ahead of the pack: RunnaAI has analysed your pace data over multiple speed sessions and thinks you are ahead of your plan. Click 'View update' to see how RunnaAI recommends you adjust the pace of your plan

Let's review your pace: RunnaAI has analysed your pace data over multiple speed sessions and thinks a small decrease in your pace will make training more sustainable. Click 'View update' to see how RunnaAI recommends you adjust the pace of your plan

Pace on point: RunnaAI has analysed your pace data over multiple speed sessions and thinks you are perfectly on track with your plan! No action required - keep hitting those pace targets and staying consistent.

Variable pace detected: RunnaAI has analysed your pace data over multiple speed sessions but couldn't make a strong recommendation, likely because some sessions you achieved your targets, and in other missed/beat them. No action required, other than focusing on meeting the pace targets and staying consistent!

Pace shift recommendations will appear as both a push notification, a card within the card manager on your profile, and as a card on the plan overview screen.

If you have receive a pace shift recommendation, clicking 'view update' will take you to a screen explaining the change we will make to your estimated current 5km pace.

Accepting the recommendation will update your plan using this new 5km time. This would have the same impact as if you were to manually edit the plan yourself in the ‘plan settings’ section.

How will my plan change if I accept a new pace target?

The only thing that will change in your plan is the pace! Accepted a new pace target will not impact the number of runs per week, the type of runs, or the length of the runs. It will only impact the pace targets we set for you for each of the runs, including for workouts with different split paces like tempos or intervals.

FAQs

Do I have to accept a pace target recommendation? What if I just had a bad week?

You have the option to decline the new pace target if you choose to do so. You will always have the ability to review the suggested change and make your own decision.

I chose not to accept the new pace target, but now I want to change it. How do I do this?

You have two options:

  • manually change your estimated current 5km time in the plan settings of your app. This will update your pace target!

  • keep running and wait for another recommendation to come through from the app! We check the data at the end of every run.

My card only says ‘pace on target’. What does this mean?

If your card says ‘pace on target’ this means you are running exactly how we expect you to be, which is fantastic! Keep up the consistency and keep logging runs.

My card has been saying 'Monitoring your pace data' for multiple weeks. What does this mean?

This is normal, don't worry! The card will display this state if we couldn't see three speed sessions completed in the last four weeks. To generate a recommendation we need more data, so keep logging runs!

How can I feedback?

This feature is still in beta, and we would love your feedback. Please complete this survey with your thoughts - it helps us work out the most important thing to build next!

We also conduct limited virtual user feedback sessions. If you would be interested in taking part to give feedback on this feature, please fill in the survey and leave your email at the end.
