Many of you have told us how important it is to have more control over your training plan—whether it’s adjusting the intensity of sessions, the amount of speed work, or the rate at which your plan builds each week.

That’s why we’ve introduced Training Preferences. This new feature replaces the old ‘Training Mode’ options and gives you more flexibility with two key settings: Training Volume and Difficulty.

It’s important to note that while we give you more control, it’s always within thresholds set by our coaching team. This ensures your plan remains productive and sustainable. For example, we won’t allow adjustments like 4/4 hard runs per week or removing speed work entirely, as these wouldn’t align with our coaching philosophy. Instead, you’ll have the freedom to tweak and refine your plan while staying on track toward your goals.

So, what exactly can you control in your plan? Let’s break it down:

Training Volume

CDN media

This feature gives you control over how high your weekly mileage peaks and how quickly you build up to it. Adjusting your Training Volume from the default ‘Progressive’ setting to ‘Steady’ or ‘Gradual’ will reduce the maximum length of your runs and create a gentler progression week by week.

With Advanced Customization, you can take this even further by manually editing the maximum length of your workouts. For example, you could adjust a 16-week intermediate half marathon plan to cap your longest training run at 10 miles instead of the default 13.1, ensuring the progression matches your preferences and needs.

It’s also worth noting that Advanced Customization allows you to increase certain elements beyond the defaults, but always within the sustainable limits set by our coaches. This ensures that your training remains productive, balanced, and aligned with your goals.

Plan Difficulty

CDN media

Plan Difficulty gives you the flexibility to adjust both the quantity and intensity of speed work in your plan. By changing the default setting from ‘Challenging’ to ‘Balanced’ or ‘Comfortable,’ you’ll see more easy runs each week, fewer reps in speed sessions, and long runs that are more often at a comfortable pace.

For those who like to fine-tune their plan even further, Advanced Customisation has you covered. Prefer more conversational-paced long runs while keeping your tougher speed sessions? No problem. Want to keep speed work frequent because you enjoy it, but just dial back the intensity? We’ve got you there too.

Looking ahead, we’re working on tying additional personal factors, like age, into your training preferences. This will allow us to further tailor your plan, adjusting intensity and volume to ensure it’s perfectly aligned with your needs.

Which plans can I edit in Training Preferences?

Training Preferences is available to customers on 5km to 50km plans. However, it is not currently available for fixed-length plans, including:

  • Running Maintenance

  • Ultra Plans >50km

  • New to Running/Return to Running

  • Functional Fitness/HYROX

  • Post Natal/Injury/Race

  • Some Get Fit plans

We’re actively working on updates to these plans in 2025 to introduce custom-length options and provide access to Training Preferences. This work is already underway, and we’re excited to expand these features soon!

FAQs: Training Preferences

How do I adjust my Training Preferences?

You can access your training preferences in the 'Manage Plan' part of the 'Plan' tab.

Can I change my Training Preferences mid-plan?

Yes! You can set them at the beginning, or tweak them throughout. Each time you change them, it will regenerate your plan and you will be able to flick through and see if the changes feel right for you!

What’s the difference between Training Volume and Plan Difficulty?

Training Volume is about how high your mileage peaks, and how fast we build you up to there.

Plan Difficulty is about the quantity and difficulty of the speed workouts you get each week, including 'hard' sessions, like hills, intervals and tempo, and the number of long runs that contain sections with pace targets.

What limits are there on customisation?

For some customers on particularly short plans, you may not have access to the full range of customisation options. This is because we may not have enough time to build you up safely to the minimum required distance pre-race to guarantee you can cross the finish line without needing to take breaks. In this case, you will see the options available, but not be able to select or confirm them. This will be explaining within the app.

How does this work if I want to keep my Runna Strength and/or Mobility sessions?

Runna strength and mobility pilates are independent of this feature and will not be impacted by changes to training preference.
