When pairing your Apple Watch with Runna, your upcoming Runna workouts will show up right on your watch guiding you through every step with live pace coaching, recovery countdowns, and prompts to speed up or slow down. When you're done, your run syncs back to Runna automatically and Pace Insights breaks down how you matched up against your targets.
There are two ways to record Runna workouts on your Apple Watch:
Runna Apple Watch App: A dedicated Runna app for your watch where you can start and record workouts, get live audio coaching, and control your session from your wrist. You can also enable Apple Watch Workout Mirroring to control the workout from either your phone or your watch.
Apple Workouts or Apple Fitness Watch app: Our WorkoutKit integration lets you start and record Runna's scheduled workouts directly from Apple Workouts/Apple Fitness Watch App.
This article covers how to connect your Apple Watch, set everything up, and get the most out of your runs when using Runna with an Apple Watch.
Can I use my Apple Watch with Runna?
Apple Watch and Runna
Runna currently supports:
Apple Watch Series 4 and later
watchOS 10.6.2 and higher.
If your Apple Watch cannot run a supported watchOS version, it will not be compatible with Runna.
Apple Workouts Watch App and Runna
Since iOS 26, some older device combinations can no longer access Runna workouts through the native Apple Workouts app integration, particularly:
Watches below Apple Watch Series 5
Apple Watch SE (1st Gen)
However, as long as your watch supports watchOS 10.6.2 or higher, you can still use the Runna Apple Watch app directly to record workouts and receive audio cues.
How to Connect Your Apple Watch to Runna
To pair Runna with your Apple watch:
Open the Runna app on your iPhone
Tap Profile (top-left) → Connected Apps & Devices → Connect Watch → Apple Watch
Accept all permissions when prompted, especially the Location and Health permissions
Once connected, install the Runna Apple Watch App to access your workouts from your wrist — or set up the Apple Workouts Watch App integration if you'd prefer to record your workouts there.
What to expect after connecting Apple Watch with Runna:
Premium users: the next 2 weeks of scheduled, unskipped and uncompleted workouts sync to your watch, refreshed every Sunday
Free trial users: the first week of workouts syncs to your watch
Your distance units (km or miles) on the watch match whatever is set in your Runna app
How to disconnect your Apple Watch from Runna:
Open the Runna app on your iPhone
Tap Profile (top-left) → Connected Apps & Devices → Apple Watch → Disconnect
This will remove your Runna workouts from your Apple Watch and stop completed workouts from syncing automatically — reconnect at any time to resume.
How to Install the Runna Apple Watch App
After connecting your Apple Watch with Runna, you can install the Runna Apple Watch App:
On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app
Scroll down and find Runna in the list of available apps
Tap Install
Wait for the app to appear on your Apple Watch — this takes a minute or two
Once installed, the Runna Apple Watch app lets you access, start and record Runna workouts directly from your watch.
How to Sync Runna with the Apple Workouts/Apple Fitness Watch App
You can complete your Runna workouts directly in the Apple Workouts Watch app thanks to our WorkoutKit integration!
If you'd prefer to see and start your Runna workouts directly in the native Apple Workouts app:
Make sure your iPhone is on iOS 18.3+ and your Apple Watch on watchOS 10+.
In the Runna phone app, go to Profile → Connected Apps & Devices → Apple Health → toggle Sync Completed Workouts ON
Then go to Connected Apps & Devices → Apple Watch → toggle Sync Upcoming Workouts to Workouts App ON and Sync Completed Workouts ON.
In the Apple Health phone app, go to Profile → Privacy → Apps → Runna → Allow Runna to Write → turn Workout Routes and Workouts ON.
Once you’ve followed these steps, you’ll be able to start your Runna’s scheduled workouts directly from Apple Workouts/Apple Fitness Watch App and have your completed workouts sync back to Runna.
Important: Runna's personalised audio cues (pace coaching, lap splits) are not available when recording through Apple Workouts or Apple Fitness Watch App. To get audio coaching during your run, use the Runna Apple Watch app instead.
Compatibility Note: If your workouts aren't syncing to the Apple Workouts Watch app, this may be due to device or watchOS compatibility. For example, upgrading your iPhone to iOS 26 while using an Apple Watch Series 5 (watchOS 10) can cause workout syncing to stop working, as older watches may not support the version of watchOS required for this integration. If you are unsure whether your device is compatible, please contact Support.
What Your Apple Watch Can — and Can't — Do with Runna
What works:
See your upcoming workouts on your wrist — scheduled Runna sessions appear on your Apple Watch automatically. Your watch updates whenever you change or reschedule your plan, and completed workouts are removed automatically — no manual steps needed.
Plan and workout updates — your watch updates whenever you change or reschedule your plan, and completed workouts are removed automatically. If plan changes haven't appeared on your watch yet, opening the Runna Apple Watch app or the Apple Workouts App will trigger a sync.
Live coaching during your run — pace targets, audio cues, vibration prompts, and on-screen step-by-step guidance (Runna Apple Watch app only)
Real-time metrics — heart rate, cadence, calories, distance, and pace tracked while you run
Workout Mirroring (Runna Apple Watch only) — start from your Apple Watch and mirror live data to your iPhone and vice versa (if enabled)
Automatic post-run sync — completed workouts save to Apple Health, appear in Apple Fitness, and sync back to Runna automatically with all the data your watch captured
What doesn't work:
Non-running activities — strength sessions, cycling, hikes, or walks recorded on your Apple Watch won't sync to your Runna training plan (only run-type activities sync)
Audio cues via Apple Workouts — Runna's personalised pace coaching isn't supported through the Apple Workouts app due to Apple API limitations; you'll receive Apple's standard workout alerts instead
What About Strava When I Connect My Apple Watch to Runna?
If you use both Strava and Runna for your workouts, we recommend only connecting Runna to Strava and not have your Apple Watch paired with Strava as well.
To connect Runna with Strava:
In Runna phone app: Profile → Connected Apps & Devices → Strava → Connect your account
Make sure your Apple Watch is not connected to Strava and that Strava isn’t linked to Apple Health.
With this setup, each run recorded on your Apple Watch (either from Runna Watch App or Apple Workouts/Fitness Watch App) will sync to Runna and Runna will sync it to Strava.
Audio Cues with Your Apple Watch
Runna's personalised audio cues — including pace alerts ("speed up" / "slow down"), lap splits, and coaching prompts — are fully supported on the Runna Apple Watch app. If you use Apple Workouts Watch App to record your workouts, Runna audio cues won’t play.
How to turn on audio cues on Apple Watch
On your Apple Watch:
Open the Runna Apple Watch app on your watch
Swipe right on home screen to open the settings menu
Toggle Audio Cues ON. This is also where you can adjust the cue volume by tapping on volume and turning the digital crown.
To adjust how often cues play, set your preferred feedback distance from the Runna app on your phone: tap Record Workout → Outdoor Run → Settings → Feedback Distance.
Where will audio cues play when using an Apple Watch?
Where audio cues play depends on which device you started your workout from. This means:
If you started your workout from Apple Watch, audio cues will play from the Apple Watch
If you started your workout from your Phone, audio cues will play from your phone
This also applies if you’re using Workout Mirroring.
Where should I connect my headphones, to my phone or to my Apple Watch?
For the best experience, we recommend connecting your headphones to the device you're starting your workout from. Here’s the full guidance: ****
Starting workout from | Headphones Connected to | Result |
Runna Apple Watch app | Apple Watch | ✅ Cues play through your headphones |
Runna phone app | iPhone | ✅ Cues play through your headphones |
Runna Apple Watch app | iPhone | ⚠️ Cues may come from your phone speaker |
Runna phone app | Apple Watch | ❌ Cues play from your phone speaker, not headphones |
Either Runna phone app or Runna Apple Watch App | Both devices | ❌ Audio conflict — cues may not play at all |
If you’re having issues with audio cues on your Apple Watch with Runna, please check out our Troubleshooting Guide for the Apple Watch.
Recommended Settings for Your Apple Watch
Take a few minutes before your first run to check these settings — they'll make a real difference to how smoothly your workouts go.
In the Runna Apple Watch app
To change Runna Apple Watch settings, swipe right on the home screen.
Audio Cues
Turn Audio Cues ON so you can receive live coaching during your runs.
Pausing and Auto Pause
You can enable Auto Pause in the settings menu so your workout automatically pauses when you stop moving, or choose to manually pause/resume your workout in two different ways:
Swipe right to open the control menu, then tap Pause/Resume
Press both the Digital Crown and Side Button together
Double Tap to End Lap
If you enable Double Tap to End Lap in settings, you can end a workout step early (such as warm-ups, rests, or intervals) and move straight to the next section.
This can be useful if you:
Reach a track and want to start the next step immediately
Want to end a rest early
Can’t complete an interval and need recovery to start sooner
Free Run
If you select Free Run when opening the Runna Apple Watch app, you can choose to record either an Outdoor or Treadmill workout. During a Free Run, double tap the watch screen to create a new lap if you’ve enabled Double Tap to End Lap. This will be used for lap metrics (like lap pace) and shown in your activity summary.
On your Apple Watch (system settings):
Setting | Our recommendation | Why |
Cover to Mute | OFF | Covered screen (by a sleeve or glove) can silence audio cues mid-run. Turn off via: Watch app on iPhone → Sounds & Haptics → Cover to Mute → OFF |
Units (km or miles) | Match your Runna app setting | Prevents confusing discrepancies between your watch display and Runna data |
Location Services | ON | Required for outdoor GPS tracking. Check: Settings on Apple Watch → Privacy → Location Services → ON |
Health Permissions | All toggles ON | Required for heart rate, calories, and post-run sync. Check: Settings on Apple Watch → Health → Apps → Runna → all toggles ON |
Apple Watch Ultra — Action Button
If you have an Apple Watch Ultra, we recommend setting up the Action Button to control Runna during your workout:
Open Settings on your Apple Watch
Tap Action Button
Select Workout
Tap Back, then choose App
Select Runna
Once enabled, the Action Button will perform the following:
First pressed: Opens the Runna app
Pressed during a structured workout: ends the current lap early (if End Current Lap Early is enabled in Runna settings)
Pressed during a Free Run: creates a new lap
To pause with Action Button enabled: press Side Button + Action Button (or Side Button + Digital Crown) at the same time
How to Start a Workout with Your Apple Watch
Outdoor runs — start from Runna Apple Watch App (recommended)
Recording your workout from your Apple Watch using the Runna Apple Watch App gives you the full Runna experience: structured workout steps, live audio coaching, pace targets, and vibration prompts directly on your wrist.
Open the Runna app on your Apple Watch
Your scheduled workout appears on the home screen — tap to select it
Tap Start
Follow the on-screen steps, audio cues, and vibration prompts through your run
During your run:
Swipe right to access settings and controls
Press Digital Crown + Side Button together to pause or resume, or swipe right → tap Pause/Resume
Double tap the screen to advance to the next step early (if Double Tap to End Lap is enabled)
End your workout: Swipe right → tap End Workout → confirm by tapping End
With Workout Mirroring enabled (Connected Apps & Devices → Apple Watch → Enable Workout Mirroring), you’ll also be able to control your workout from your phone. See Apple Watch Workout Mirroring for more details.
Starting from multiple places at once? We recommend Workout Mirroring for that! Recording from both your Apple Watch and iPhone simultaneously may create two separate workouts. If you started your workout from both devices within 60 seconds of each other, Runna merges them automatically. See Handling Duplicate Activities for more info.
Treadmill runs — start from your iPhone with Workout Mirroring
For treadmill runs, we recommend starting from the Runna app on your iPhone. Your iPhone tracks distance and pace from the treadmill, and your Apple Watch streams heart rate, cadence, and calories automatically.
Open the Runna app on both your iPhone and Apple Watch
On your iPhone: Today tab → Workout → Start Workout → Treadmill Run
Your Apple Watch automatically starts streaming biometrics
Control the workout from either device
After the run, you can adjust distance and speed directly in the Runna app. Both the phone and watch recordings merge automatically.
→ For more information on recording a treadmill workout with a smartwatch, check out Recording a Treadmill Workout with Your Compatible Smartwatch.
What Happens After I Complete My Workout with Apple Watch?
If you started or recorded your workout from the Runna Apple Watch app:
Your workout saves automatically to Apple Health and appears in Apple Fitness with the data your watch captured (duration, distance, pace, heart rate, cadence, calories)
It syncs back to Runna within a few minutes and links to your scheduled session in the plan
Your completed run appears in the Activities tab and the planned session is marked as completed
You can review your post-workout stats in the Runna phone app, including Pace Insights, your splits and how you compared to your plan targets
If enabled, your workout will also sync to Strava
If you started or recorded your workout from the Apple Watch Workouts or Apple Fitness app:
Your workout saves to Apple Fitness and Apple Health with the data your Apple Watch captured (duration, distance, pace, heart rate, cadence, calories)
Runna picks it up via the Apple Health sync and it appears in your Activities tab
It should link automatically to your scheduled Runna session
If your completed workout on Apple Watch isn't showing in Runna:
How to Calibrate Your Apple Watch
If you’re seeing issues with the distance, pace, or GPS your Apple Watch is reporting, calibrating it can help improve accuracy. Calibration also helps your watch learn your fitness level and stride length, which can improve tracking when GPS is limited or unavailable.
Step 1: Reset your calibration data
On your iPhone, open the Watch app
Tap My Watch → Privacy
Tap Reset Fitness Calibration Data
Step 2: Check your settings
On your iPhone, open the Settings app
Tap Privacy & Security → Location Services
Make sure Location Services is turned on
Scroll down and tap System Services
Make sure Motion Calibration & Distance is turned on
Step 3: Calibrate your Apple Watch
Put on your Apple Watch and go to a flat, open outdoor area with clear skies (good GPS reception)
Open the Workout app
Select Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run
Walk or run at your normal pace for around 20 minutes
FAQs
How do I listen to Apple Watch audio cues and music/podcasts at the same time?
To be able to hear audio cues and music (from Spotify or other music apps), here’s what you can do:
Make sure you have Audio cues enabled in the Runna Apple Watch app
Connect your headphones to your Apple Watch only (not your phone)
We recommend to start your workout and your music from your Apple Watch
If you’re not using a music app, we recommend downloading your music or podcasts directly to your Apple Watch and pairing your headphones to it.
Can I customise my Apple Watch face?
Yes! The Runna Apple Watch app lets you control which metrics appear on your workout screens, add and remove screens, and reorder them to suit how you train with an Apple Watch.
Note: This feature is currently available in Runna Labs (app version 8.34.0 and later). If you don't see it, it may not have rolled out to your account yet.
To set it up:
Open the Runna app on your Apple Watch
Go to Settings → Customize Screens
Select a template: Free Runs, Laps without Targets (warm-ups, cool-downs, easy runs), or Laps with Targets (intervals, tempo, paced steps)
Scroll to disable default screens, tap Add Screen to add a custom one, or tap Reorder Screens to change the order
Tap any metric placeholder to choose from: pace, heart rate, distance, time, cadence, elevation, calories, and more
You can restore your screens to the default setup, even if you removed them, by tapping Restore Defaults.
A few things to know:
Customisation is done on the watch, phone configuration is not available yet
The size of the metrics can’t be changed for now
Some screens can't be removed: the Pace Target screen in structured workouts is always present
The pace chart and heart rate zone bar currently can’t be on the same screen
You can remove the map screen but if you start a workout with a linked route, the map screen will automatically reappear so you're never left without navigation.
